Man says ‘disintegrating’ newbuild home left him with grey skin from ‘rotting walls’

Gavin Inskip, 42, paid £190,000 for the property in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, but says he will never buy a new-build again after living with the problems for over a decade

A homebuyer claims his new-build property left him with ‘grey scaley mackerel skin’ from its rotting walls.

Gavin Inskip, 42, brought the Taylor Wimpey flat in Hoddesdon, Hertfordshire, for £190,000.

He made the big buy in 2007 – but says his health is still suffering.

The radio presenter also found out the apartment’s toilet pipes were fitted up-hill – causing waste to flow backwards.

He says the floor “crumbled” when he lifted a tile after smelling damp in his en-suite bathroom.

Gavin says the problems weren’t fixed until 2018 – more than a decade after he got the keys.

Now he says the terrible experience means he will never buy a new-build again.

“Every morning I would wake up with a heavy head. I had this grey, scaley mackerel skin under my eye,” he told The Sun.

“I was sleeping next to a decaying en-suite. I know there are leaks, but that bathroom wasn’t fit for purpose.

“Ten years it had been decaying, for ten years. The whole thing was a shell of decay – the builder couldn’t believe what he was seeing.”

He also claimed his waste pipe was not attached to the mains pipe in the kitchen, and believes the bathroom tiles were fitted straight onto plasterboard.

Gavin says the experience has been so bad that he won’t consider buying another new-build property ever again.
